Since its inception in 2015, Accra Open, the premier West African open debate competition, is arguably the most competitive debate tournament in Africa. It has been a tournament that all African debaters look forward to each year. This is not only due to its excellent organization. High quality debating and convivial social events are some of the things associated with the championship in the past.
After 6 editions, Accra Open has seen the finest of African debaters compete from over 40 reputable African universities from Ghana, Nigeria, The Gambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. Participants and winners have gone on to excel in bigger championships like the World Universities Debate Championship. This year’s edition dubbed the ‘Avengers’ edition is set to reunite debaters from across the globe as they battle intellectually throughout the rounds while forging or maintaining lasting friendships.
The championship returns to an in-person event this year after the pandemic forced it online in 2020. This year’s residential tournament will be held from the 20th to the 25th of August in Accra. Participation for the Avengers edition is open to all debaters, judges and interested people above 16 years. The registration fee is set at GHS 300 (covers participation, accommodation, breakfast and all associated activities) and the deadline is on the 12th of August. There is a GHS 45 discount for participants who complete their registration on or before 1st August.
Debates will be based on the British Parliamentary format of debating. Check the format here. Training will be available for new participants who are unfamiliar with the format ahead of the tournament. There will also be a public speaking competition at the tournament.
Whatever it takes!
